Georgia Update
In Georgia, the AKA and kratom advocates defeated the proposed ban on kratom that was promoted by trial lawyers who have the single objective of destroying the kratom industry.Despite extensive negotiations that converted the ban to a strengthened kratom consumer protection act, there are significant penalties in that legislation that has made some Georgia legislators extremely uncomfortable. HB 181 was tabled and will be reconsidered in the next session of the Legislature that convenes in January 2024.The AKA opposes criminalization of kratom consumers; opposes unfair and onerous criminal penalties that reduces competition and restricts consumer access to kratom products; and we support appropriate regulations on procssing of pure kratom products, with appropriate labeling requirements.
